I am proud to be an early adopter of vertical format film-making.  Vertical video is an interesting challenge behind the camera and in the editing bay.
Creating “vertical first” video is a different approach but opens up doors to new opportunities.  While it’s possible to crop to a vertical aspect ratio, I prefer to shoot content in vertical orientation when possible. 
Not only is vertical video a creative choice, it is also a key component of content strategy. Since Instagram introduced IGTV, it has pushed users and content to the platform.  Consequently “vertical first” video is a great way to increase organic engagement. While this trend may change, the marketing campaigns I have worked on have benefited from being current with this trend.
