On October 21st, 2023, three friends and I set out to complete the inaugural Whaleathon.
The Whaleathon is a true test of physical and mental stamina. It is an unsanctioned marathon around the infamous “Out of the Blue” traffic roundabout. To complete the 26.2 mile distance runners must loop the whale 630 times. Since the first Whaleathon, several others have successfully tackled the unrelenting 0.04-mile loops around one of Salt Lake’s most iconic public art projects.
To celebrate our accomplishment, I provided creative direction to illustrator Gus Molina to create an artwork celebrating the bizarre feat. The art will be featured on apparel and a portion of the proceeds will go to the non-profit organization Friends of the Great Salt Lake.
